Case Study: tkMSA embraces technology to enhance coordination and communication via an SSI software solution.

The Project

thyssenkrupp Marine Systems Australia (tkMSA) recently used software from Autodesk and SSI on a navy refit project for the ANZAC Class frigates for the Royal New Zealand Navy. Part of this project included the design of two new mast modules.

The Requirements

For the mast modules, tkMSA needed a CAD/CAM software solution to coordinate work in all engineering disciplines, be able to seamlessly handle both 2D and 3D input and output, and a way to easily communicate with the various stakeholders.

The Solution

tKMSA expanded its comprehensive suite of Autodesk software and SSI’s ShipConstructor software products to complete this job. The work itself involved laser scanning, the conversion of raster drawings to vectors, the conversion of 2D reference DWGs into a 3D model, modeling, and then the generation of new 2D DWGs.

The Result

The numerous efficiency promoting features within SSI’s ShipConstructor increased the number of items modeled and enabled enhanced detailing, all of which led to a “huge improvement” in output documentation. This was well received by all stakeholders including the Navy as well as the shipyard. An added bonus was that the 2D drawings generated from the 3D ShipConstructor model remained associatively linked so that any changes requested by the stakeholders could be easily accommodated.
